Toronto climb from bottom

Toronto FC climbed off the foot of the MLS Eastern Conference standings with a 1-0 win over Western Conference strugglers, and fellow Canadian outfit, the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Nick Soolsma's 52-minute penalty, awarded after the Dutchman had been brought down in the area by Greg Janicki, proved the difference between the two sides in the encounter at BMO Field.

Toronto's first win since May 7 sees them climb to sixth place in the east - albeit having played at least two games more than most of their conference rivals - while the Whitecaps remain bottom of the pile in the west.
