Twente go Dutch with Adriaanse

FC Twente have handed Co Adriaanse a return to the Eredivisie after unveiling the former Ajax and Porto boss as their new manager.

Adriaanse, 63, left the Netherlands in 2005 after parting company with AZ Alkmaar and in the intervening years has worked in Austria, Portugal, Ukraine and Qatar, where he had most recently been coaching the country's Olympic team.

Twente failed to successfully defend their Eredivise title last season, with Ajax emerging as domestic champions and coach Michel Preud'homme subsequently moving on to Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab Riyadh two weeks ago.

But new manager Adriaanse is confident he can lead Twente to more slverware and is relishing a managerial return in his homeland.

"When Twente approached me, I was immediately very interested," said Adriaanse. "I have worked abroad for six years but as a coach I still am a typical product of the Dutch school. In the Netherlands we try to play attractive and attacking football; abroad they often think differently so I was eager to return home.

"Twente are a good example. At Twente I will have a squad with lots of possibilities who have already won trophies. The club also has a good organisational structure, so I'm glad Twente have given me the opportunity to work here."

Adriaanse, who has won league titiles in Austria and Portugal, will also be leading Twente in the Champions League third qualifyingn round.
