Lyon appoint Garde as Puel replacement

Lyon have appointed former defender Remi Garde as their new manager to replace Claude Puel, who left the club on Monday.

Garde will become the 13th manager of Jean-Michel Aulas' reign as Lyon president and it will be his first managerial position, though he has worked for the club as a coach and most recently as director of the club's training centre, overseeing youth development.

The 45-year-old, who retired from playing in 1999 after spells with Strasbourg, Lyon and Arsenal, will be officially unveiled at a press conference scheduled for 1030 BST on Wednesday.

A statement on the Lyon website read: ''On Wednesday June 22 at 11:30am (1030 BST), (there will be) a press conference with Jean-Michel Aulas in the presence of Bernard Lacombe and Remi Garde for the appointment of the latter at the head of the first-team squad.''

Lyon have failed to win the Ligue 1 title since claiming their seventh in a row in 2008 and Garde's chief priority will be reclaiming the domestic crown, though Champions League progress will also be important.

Garde was part of the OL coaching staff under Paul Le Guen and Gerard Houllier, before spending three years as Arsenal's director of football and then returning to Lyon in 2010.
