Lyon confirm Puel departure

Lyon have announced that Claude Puel has left his job as coach of the club after they failed to pick up any silverware for the third successive season in France.

Puel, who saw protests against him this campaign, was always likely to quit after a dismal year that saw the side only just finish third in the table.

A statement on the club's website read: "Lyon wishes to announce the departure of Claude Puel, who is no longer the head coach of the club as of today (Monday)."

News broke last week of a conciliation hearing organised by the French Professional League, in which it was announced that the coach would be departing the Stade Gerland.

Legal commission president Andre Soulier said after the hearing: "We've ratified the divorce decision. Our findings will be transmitted to both parties in the coming hours. In the coming days Lyon will be able to send a letter of dismissal to Mr Puel and so give Mr Puel the freedom to find another employer."

Puel could be in line to receive as much as €4 million (£3.5 million) in compensation.

"The commission attested to the non-conciliation," said Puel after the hearing. "For the next part, we'll see."

Former Arsenal midfielder Remi Garde, the current director of Lyon's youth training centre, has been widely tipped to replace Puel.
