Kansas City record historic win

Kansas City have recorded their first victory in their new home after scoring a 1-0 win over San Jose Earthquakes at Livestrong Sporting Park on Friday evening.

A C.J. Sapong strike from close range did the damage for Sporting KC and extended the club's unbeaten streak to five games, while bringing to a close the Earthquakes' similar six-game run without loss. 18,467 fans were on hand for the historic victory, but the match got off to a slow start as the two sides probed for an opening throughout the opening half-hour.

Then, on 31 minutes, Sapong prodded home a curling Graham Zusi free-kick at the near post, giving Quakes' shot-stopper Jon Busch no chance.

Kansas City grew confident after claiming the advantage, and began to create further chances through Sapong and Omar Bravo. With the momentum shifting toward the home side, San Jose boss Frank Yallop brought on Simon Dawkins and Ellis McLoughlin at halftime for Anthony Ampaipitakwong and Sam Cronin.

It was the spark the visitors were looking for as Dawkins and Khari Stephenson both hit stinging shots just wide of the mark. It was not to be for the Quakes, however, as they slipped to defeat ahead of their next clash against the LA Galaxy.

Peter Vermes went to his bench to shore things up on the hour mark, bringing Júlio César and Kei Kamara into the action, which provided balance to the Kansas line-up and allowed Sporting to close out the match, notching their third win of the season in the process.

With their first win at their new stadium under their belts, Sporting will now travel to Philadelphia to take on Union on June 22, albeit still at the foot of the MLS Eastern Conference table.
