Jones: England still confident

England's progression to the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championship remains in jeopardy after a disappointing 0-0 draw on Wednesday night against Ukraine.

The Young Lions' second consecutive draw means that they will need to win their final Group B match over the Czech Republic to avoid crashing out of the tournament in Denmark.

Although he admitted England were poor in the first half at Herning's MCH Arena, defender Phil Jones has proven why Manchester United doled out £16 million to poach him from Blackburn this week, and remains resolute his team will advance.

"Coming into the group, we knew we had three difficult teams to beat and play against," the 19-year-old said. "If you'd said to us at the start of the tournament going into the last game, can it be in our own hands, we'd have taken that."

"We've got another tough game on Sunday but we'll be ready."

England may have struggled at times in their last two matches, but they have remained largely untroubled at the back with new United team-mates Jones and Chris Smalling further enhancing their reputations.

The Young Lions will need to improve significantly on Wednesday's performance if they plan on moving past the group stage, and manager Stuart Pearce believes he has the right squad to get the job done.

"We go into the game Sunday having to win to go through but our destiny is in our own hands," he said. "This is why you bring players to tournaments, to perform under pressure."

Whether his players can deliver under that pressure will be made clear in Sunday's must-win clash in Viborg.
