Liverpool begin Adam talks

Blackpool have opened "preliminary discussions" with Liverpool over the sale of Charlie Adam, Tangerines chairman Karl Oyston has confirmed.

• Liverpool chase Serie A defender
• Reds linked with Clichy

Adam was close to leaving Bloomfield Road in the January transfer window and following Blackpool's relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season his exit became almost certain.

Liverpool had a £6.8 million bid turned down in the winter and have now renewed their interest in the 25-year-old Scotland midfielder, but negotiations are at an early stage.

Asked if the Reds had tabled an offer, Oyston told The Gazette: "We've had a few very preliminary discussions and enquiries but nothing of any substance."

Oyston, who also rejected a bid from Tottenham in January, hinted that more than one club have been sniffing around his captain, with Aston Villa also heavily linked with Adam.

"We've had a few discussions this summer but nothing conclusive so really there is nothing to report," Oyston added.

"Are the reports wide of the mark? I'm sure that football clubs have talks with lots of players all summer that they probably shouldn't do. I'm sure that goes on. If January is anything to go by that is certainly the case."

Liverpool have already signed England Under-21 midfielder Jordan Henderson from Sunderland for £16 million and are expected to add more new players during a busy summer.
