Newcastle move for Erding

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has confirmed his interest in Paris St Germain striker Mevlut Erding.

The Magpies have turned their attention to Erding after their hopes of landing frontman Kevin Gameiro were dashed when he joined PSG from Lorient, and with Lille's Gervinho also seemingly headed for Arsenal.

Erding has been in Newcastle's sights for some time - they made an enquiry about him last summer - but they could now be ready to make a second move.

Pardew told the Journal: "Erding has always been on our radar. He's a very good player and that is all I will say at the moment. We had a bit of a disappointment with Kevin Gameiro as he has decided to go elsewhere. We made a fantastic offer to the club and to him, but these things happen.

"We tried very hard on that one, but we always knew there would be setbacks along the way and we have always had other people in mind, deals we have been trying to keep to ourselves for obvious reasons. We are working extremely hard to make those deals happen and I'm pretty happy with how things have gone so far.

"We should have another signing finished in the next few days, and we will able to confirm that one as well.''

The Magpies are attempting to push home their interest in West Ham's Senegal international Demba Ba as they try to plug the gap left by Andy Carroll's move to Liverpool.

They are also working on a deal to bring Swansea full-back Neil Taylor to St James' Park, although they insist not as a direct replacement for Jose Enrique should the Spaniard fail to agree a new deal and move on rather than see out the remaining year of his current contract.

Little movement is expected on any front until later this week at the earliest, although Pardew is hopeful of adding to his capture of Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye before the end of the month.
