Fournier appointed Auxerre boss

Auxerre have confirmed Laurent Fournier as their new coach.

Former Strasbourg boss Fournier, 46, has also enjoyed spells in charge of Paris St Germain, Nimes and Creteil and replaces Jean Fernandez at the Stade Abbe Deschamps.

Fernandez quit at the end of the season and has now taken charge at Nancy, with Fournier being chosen to lead Auxerre, reportedly in preference to former PSG and Rangers boss Paul Le Guen.

Fournier, who has signed a three-year contract, said: ''I am very proud to join the club. Speaking to the president made the difference, the project he presented enticed me. For me, AJA is the top. There is a good mix of youth and experience.''

Bernard David, Guillaume Colin and Xavier Poitrinal will remain from Fernandez's backroom staff, with Fournier content not to rock the boat, and he insists there will be no problem in not bringing his own men.

''I already know certain members of the staff, they are good club men and they will bring me a lot,'' he said. ''There are no excuses, it is simply about putting everything into my work. Excuses are for the weak, if I wasn't certain of my choice I would not have come here.''

Reflecting on what qualities he will bring to the role, he said: ''I am close to my players, which served me well at Strasbourg and I hope this approach will work for me at Auxerre.

''I had good times at Paris and then I was discarded. We finished fourth with Creteil in a difficult context and fourth with Strasbourg also in difficult circumstances.

''My aim is to build a solid and ambitious team who play attacking football and get the supporters dreaming. The public have to identify with the team and the players. For that, the players must give 200% for the jersey.''
