Dempsey hints at Fulham exit

Fulham forward Clint Dempsey has shocked his club by revealing he would leave Craven Cottage for a Champions League team.

• Jol appointed Fulham manager

The Cottagers appointed Martin Jol as manager on Tuesday but Dempsey, 28, could become the first Cottager to follow his old coach, Mark Hughes, out the door should a big club come calling.

Dempsey said: "Right now, I'm thinking about Europe and playing in Champions League - at least experiencing that in my career, being in Champions League.

"That's a goal. That's every player's goal. Every player wants to win trophies and play at the highest level possible. If someday I get the opportunity to play for a big club in the Champions League, that would be great. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't a dream."

Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League table this season, the Cottagers still managed to qualify for next season's Europa League thanks to FIFA's Fair Play Award. It will be the club's first appearance in the tournament since 2010, when their miraculous run - highlighted by Dempsey's wondergoal in a comeback victory over Juventus in the round of 16 - fell just short losing 2-1 to Atletico Madrid in the final.

USA international Dempsey has spent the last four years at Fulham since arriving from Major League Soccer's New England Revolution in 2007, and has been on AC Milan's radar in recent weeks.
