Pulis ready for transfer swoops

Stoke manager Tony Pulis is optimistic that a bustling summer transfer window will render a handful of players at some big English clubs surplus to requirements and ripe for the Potters' plucking.

Pulis, who is still recovering from his squad's heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup final last month, will be looking to pounce on any stars should they become available.

"I expect it to be a busy close-season," said Pulis. "A lot of money will be spent at the top end of the market - not just Man City, as everyone expects, but also United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. I think they will all have a go.

"That either clogs up the market because unwanted players are sitting on big contracts that clubs like us will not pay, or hopefully it might free the market up if their clubs help out so we can do the deals."

Pulis is thought to be mulling a double swoop for Liverpool duo David Ngog and Christian Poulsen, but is understood to also be considering moves for Manchester United's Darron Gibson, Manchester City's Shaun Wright-Phillips, and Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas in an effort to strengthen Stoke's midfield.

The Potters will be eager to improve upon their 13th place finish in the league table this season, their lowest in England's top flight since winning promotion from the Championship back in 2008.
