Gotz confirmed as Vietnam boss

Former Hertha Berlin and 1860 Munich boss Falko Gotz has been appointed the new coach of Vietnam.

Gotz, 49, agreed a two-year contract to fill the post left vacant by Henrique Calisto after the latter departed to take over Thai Premier League team Muang Thong United.

''I will try to identify and fully exploit the strengths of the Vietnam players,'' said Gotz on the Vietnam Football Federation's official website. ''But my philosophy is based on three principles - discipline, physical fitness and team spirit.

''However, my responsibility is not just to the national team but to also help develop football in the region.''

VFF president Pham Ngoc Vien added: ''Of all the coaches on the shortlist, Falko Gotz was best suited for football in Vietnam and met the criteria set out. With his experience as a professional coach, Falko Gotz brings to Vietnam football new ideas and a new spirit to meet big goals for the future of football in Vietnam.''

Gotz's first competitive game in charge will come early next month when Vietnam begin their World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign against Macau.
