Redknapp eyes Johnson swoop

Harry Redknapp could be set to cash in on Birmingham's relegation from the Premier League and bring defender Roger Johnson to Tottenham.

The Spurs boss has admitted he needs to bolster his squad this summer after the club missed out on fourth place following their first season in the Champions League.

With Jonathan Woodgate and Sebastien Bassong seemingly on their way out of White Hart Lane, William Gallas in the last year of his contract and perennial injury concerns over captain Ledley King, Redknapp believes Johnson would be the perfect addition to his squad.

"He's a fantastic player, he leads by example," Redknapp said in the Sun.

However, Redknapp is likely to face a fight on his hands with both Wolves and Arsenal believed to be interested in the player, while Birmingham acting chairman Peter Pannu has admitted every player is for sale, at the right price.

"If someone offers £3 million for one of our top players, they will be told 'forget it', but if someone offers £10 million, £15 million, then we are more likely to think about it," Pannu said.

"But nothing is cast in stone - it is too early really to talk about this sort of thing. I will be meeting [owner Carson Yeung] to discuss what we must do for next season."

Kevin Phillips fears Birmingham could lose up to 10 players. The 37-year-old told talkSPORT: "A part of me fears for Birmingham because there is a lot of players in that dressing room of a certain age, 28 or 29, who want to stay in the Premier League.

"It's only natural, so part of me fears that they could lose eight or nine players. There could be up to 10 players leaving the club. It's whether they can replace them with the quality that's going to get them back into the Premier League because of the young players coming through at Birmingham I don't see an awful lot there.

"There are maybe two, three or four (that could make it). The players getting produced there are not great. But they have certainly got a manager in place (Alex McLeish) who can get the best out of their players.''

Phillips still believes it was a successful season for Blues because of their Carling Cup final success - their first major trophy for 48 years. He said: "Naturally we're all disappointed and from a personal side I've experienced relegation three times now and believe me it's not nice.

"But we can take something out of the season. We won the Carling Cup and that doesn't happen very often - certainly for Birmingham City - so, in that sense, it's been a fantastic season.''
