Pichichi dedicated to team-mates

Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to praise the influence of others after he set a new La Liga record of 40 goals for the season by scoring twice in Real Madrid's 8-1 thrashing of Almeria on Saturday.

• La Liga last day review

Ronaldo had been level with Hugo Sanchez and Telmo Zarra before the final match of the campaign, but he needed just four minutes to score the opening goal of the game which secured his place alone in the record books, before adding another in the 77th minute.

"The reason I've scored so many goals is thanks to me team-mates and I'm very grateful to them,'' said Ronaldo, who dedicated his first Pichichi award as La Liga's top scorer to his club-mates and the fans. "I'm generous with my team-mates because they are the same with me. Without their help I wouldn't have been able to score 40 goals in the league.

"We are very happy to finish the season in this way,'' said Ronaldo, who has helped Madrid score 21 goals in winning their last four games, on his club's website. "To score 102 goals is very difficult and I want to congratulate my team-mates for achieving that. The coach wanted us to finish the season with a lot of goals to start the next season with ambition and we've done that.''

Looking ahead, Ronaldo said of the possibility of him reaching a similar mark again: "It's difficult to repeat these figures, but nothing is impossible and I'm going to continue working to achieve it.''
