Grant warning for successor

Former West Ham manager Avram Grant has warned prospective managers of the club not to expect any loyalty from its hierarchy, after revealing his job was offered to six other men during January.

• Di Canio would "give everything"
• Sullivan regrets hiring Grant
• McClaren rules himself out
• Gold: We'll get it right
• Police called to West Ham party
• Cole to take wage cut

Grant was sacked from his job at the weekend, following confirmation of the club's relegation from the Premier League. With the rumour mill already naming numerous candidates for the vacancy, Grant feels aggrieved at the way he has been treated by the club and warned anyone considering the role to think about the pressures that will come with it.

"Avram points to January when Martin O'Neill was offered his job [when Grant was reportedly going to be sacked whatever the result against Arsenal on 15 January]," a source described as a close friend told The Guardian. "He says six managers were asked by the club to take over, including Steve McClaren and Sam Allardyce, but they would not do it because they knew the situation there."

The friend also said that Grant believes he should have been given the chance to take the club out of the Championship.

"Avram feels frustrated. If he had not been sacked he believes he could have steadied the club and taken it on to much better things next season," the source added.

"He actually said that despite all the financial difficulties at Portsmouth, where players were not being paid and the club faced liquidation, that job was far easier than the West Ham one because he could concentrate on the on-field job."

Many names have already been linked with the job at Upton Park, including O'Neill and Allardyce. Another is Dave Jones, who saw his Cardiff City side knocked out of the playoffs at the hands of Reading on Tuesday evening.

Jones acknowledged that a change of scenery might now be in order.

"At the moment I feel lower than a snake's belly," Jones said. "I'll take stock of my life, my position and whether I want to [continue].

"And it's whether the owners and the hierarchy of the football club want you to. Everybody's future comes into it at a football club.

"I'll get up tomorrow morning and I'll sift through with the staff and see what's the best course of action to take for this football club - or it may be taken out of my hands and they [the club's backers] want to do something else."
