Mexes and Taiwo relishing Milan moves

AC Milan's new signings Philippe Mexes and Taye Taiwo have expressed their delight at joining the Italian champions.

Mexes, 29, confirmed that he has officially become a Rossoneri player, after ending his seven-year association with Roma.

"I can make it official,'' Mexes said. "I am a Milan player for the next four seasons. I am happy to arrive to Milan, one of the best clubs in Italy and the world. I am proud, especially when I see the new jersey with the Scudetto!''

The France defender has long been a target for Milan, but his former club's refusal to sell him forced them to wait until his contract expired.

"When Milan offered me this opportunity I did not hesitate,'' Mexes said in an interview with France Football. "I had to options to remain at Roma or to join Milan. Roma has been my second home but I made the decision to leave the club this winter. I took into consideration all the criteria. I also knew that Milan had followed me for the last three years.

"Milan is a reference for everyone and they share my ambitions. It's a club that cultivates victories and is superior just like Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid. I am going there to win. The Champions League is also my aim.''

The French international will join his new club in pre-season training on July 12 and Nigerian international Taiwo will be among his new team-mates when he leaves Marseille for the San Siro at the end of the season.

And like Mexes the 26-year-old left-back feels a move to a club with the reputation of Milan is a big step forward in his career.

"I have decided to sign for Milan because they are an excellent team who play great football," Taiwo was quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"In my opinion, they are at the same level as clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea. I am not saying that the other teams that were after my signature are not good teams, though. It is just that ever since making my international debut for Nigeria, I have dreamt of playing for an absolute top club.

"Milan have superb players like [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, [Clarence] Seedorf and [Alexandre] Pato."
