Sunderland pass on Muntari

Sunderland have decided not to take up an option to buy on-loan midfielder Sulley Muntari on a permanent deal and confirmed the Ghana international will return to Inter Milan.

Muntari has failed to impress since moving to the club in January and Sunderland boss Steve Bruce will look elsewhere for reinforcements in the summer.

The 26-year-old former Portsmouth star contributed to the Black Cats' winner at Bolton last week - his shot was bundled into his own net by Zat Knight - but has otherwise disappointed and will not feature for the club again.

Bruce said: "Sulley has been a great professional in his time here and naturally we'd like to thank him for his contribution to our season and wish him all the best for the future.''

Muntari's arrival at the Stadium of Light coincided with a slump in form as the second half of the campaign has proved fruitless for the Wearsiders. He made his breakthrough at Italian outfit Udinese, making nine appearances for the Black Cats but will play no further part in their season.

Muntari must now consider his options and either fight for a first-team place at Inter under coach Leonardo or look for another transfer elsewhere.
