Adams returns to Port Vale

Micky Adams has returned as manager of Port Vale after the 49-year-old left Vale Park in the new year to manage his boyhood club Sheffield United.

Adams failed to keep the Blades in the Championship and was sacked on Tuesday after winning just four games since his appointment. Adams now returns to Port Vale, who finished 11th in League Two this season.

''I always said that Sheffield United would be the only club to tempt me away from Vale and ultimately, I let my heart rule my head,'' Adams told Vale's official website.

''I have followed Vale's fortunes closely since I left in January and no-one is more disappointed than me that the club did not achieve promotion this season.''

The club's chairman Bill Bratt said: ''When we learned that Micky had become available, it was clear that he was our preferred candidate. I have always found Micky to be an honest and up-front character and although I am disappointed for him personally that things did not work out at Sheffield United, their loss is most definitely our gain.''

Mark Grew had been in caretaker charge at Vale Park. Jim Gannon had taken over from Adams but only lasted just over 10 weeks in the job.
