Dawson praises Spurs star Sandro

Michael Dawson has heaped praise on Tottenham team-mate Sandro after the midfielder's agent moved to quash speculation that his client would be leaving White Hart Lane this summer.

The Brazil international has enjoyed a successful first season at the North London club, making 24 appearances and starring in the club's Champions League last-16 tie with AC Milan.

He scored his first goal for the club with a 30-yard rocket against Chelsea last month and is now a regular fixture in the Tottenham midfield alongside Luka Modric.

His performances have reportedly attracted the interest of Milan and a number of the continent's biggest sides, but his agent Luiz Paulo Chignall denied that the 22-year-old wants to leave.

"Would Sandro like to play in Serie A? Yes, but for now he's good for Tottenham,'' he told tuttomercatoweb. "Reading the newspapers I see that many clubs are interested in Sandro, like Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma and Real Madrid. But I have not received any proposal and no one has talked to me.

"I am a bit worried, because no intermediary is entitled to speak on behalf of Sandro. My concern is that someone has spoken on behalf of Sandro, not being authorised to do so.''

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will be glad to hear Chignall's comments as he knows it will be hard to hang on to the club's best players after their failure to secure Champions League football next year. Sandro has become a fans' favourite since he made his debut last September and Dawson admits he has been impressed with the combative midfielder.

"Sandro's performances in the Champions League were great and he certainly makes our job a lot easier,'' he said. "He sits just in front, wins balls, breaks play up, tracks players and we all know now he can score goals after that strike at Chelsea. He's a top, top player. He's also a great lad to have in and around the club. He's still learning English but he's a full part of the banter and everyone loves him in the changing room.''

Sandro's emergence means that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp may not follow up previous interest in Scott Parker and Charlie Adam this summer.

"Sandro is emerging as a top player,'' Redknapp said after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at Manchester City. "He's come into the English game and his performance against City's strong midfield was excellent.''
