Redknapp in dark over spending

Harry Redknapp fears a tightening of the purse strings over the summer after Tottenham Hotspur failed to land a spot in next season's Champions League.

• Spurs blog: The race for sixth

Spurs stormed to the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition this season - but they will not compete in the competition during the next campaign, having lost 1-0 to Manchester City on Tuesday.

That result means that Spurs have slumped into sixth place, leaving them staring at the prospect of no European football whatsoever next season - and Redknapp concedes that may curb the club's spending power.

The veteran boss will try to generate funds by selling the club's fringe players, with Robbie Keane and David Bentley two high-profile names who are likely to be allowed to leave.

"I don't know if we have any money to spend. We might not," said Redknapp. "I have not asked the chairman. We will have to wait and see. If there isn't we will get on with it again and be strong next year. The only way we can do it is to shift a few in the summer and bring on or two in."

Elsewhere, Ledley King made his first appearance since October on Wednesday, playing for Spurs reserves in a friendly against West Ham. King, who has been plagued by a persistent groin problem, managed 90 minutes as Tottenham ran out 3-2 winners.
