Grant accept blame

West Ham boss Avram Grant took full responsibility for his club's struggles as the Hammers teeter on the brink of relegation from the Premier League.

• Gallows humour at Hammers

Thomas Hitzlsperger's equaliser earned a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Blackburn but Grant's side remain at the foot of the table with just two games to play.

The trip to Wigan next Saturday looks likely to be a make or break clash for both sides as they fight for survival and a win at the DW Stadium could yet keep the Hammers in the top flight for a seventh successive season.

Whether or not Grant - who was roundly booed by the Upton Park crowd when he appeared on the big screen during the first half - will still be in his post if they do remains unclear but the Israeli refused to shy away from the pressure he is under.

He said: "It's my responsibility. My responsibility. All the professional things that happen in the club. I cannot argue with the position. I can argue about the football that we play, which is positive and good.

"We are missing the player of the year in Scott Parker and we're bottom of the league, and other players, and we're dealing with it as well as we can. I want the results to be better. I'm not looking for excuses or saying we have no luck, but we need a bit of this. It could help. You need to wait and see about my position. My position is not important.''

Grant has seen owners David Gold and David Sullivan comment on the club's problems in the last week - with Sullivan admitting that England internationals will be sold if they go down - but he refused to be drawn on his relationship with the board.

When asked if he retains the owners' support, Grant said: "I will not answer this question. It's a trick question. Everyone in the club wants West Ham to succeed. Sometimes some people make mistakes. But everyone, from the kit man to the owner, wants West Ham to succeed.

"This was our target. We thought things would be different. On the football side, we don't have complaints. This is the football we more or less wanted to play this season. I can answer only about what I can do. I'm not criticising or giving compliments. Ask other people, not me.''
