Carrick: Best yet to come

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes the team can only get better as they close on a 19th Premier League title.

• Ferguson: Ronaldo unlikely to return
• Sir Alex: Spirit is key
• Fletcher cautious
• Evra: Beware Gunners
• Preview: Man Utd v Arsenal

United have not performed with their usual style as they sit on top of the table, winning only four matches away from Old Trafford, but have a nucleus of talent at the right age to grow as a squad.

Carrick insists that even if United stumble in the run-in and in a likely Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley, a trophy-laden future lies ahead.

"We haven't won anything yet, and you know that here greatness is judged on what you win, so it's difficult to rate this current team at the moment," he told the Daily Mirror. "You have to win things and keep winning to be considered a great side - but if you take the European game against Schalke, it was one of our best performances in a long, long time.

"When you take into account the circumstances, the fact it was a semi-final and normally how tight they are, then in that respect it shows you this current Manchester United team has real quality.

"But it's obvious we have to wait until the end of the season before we can put this team up against previous Manchester United sides.

"The young lads we have got at the moment, there is so much promise for the future, and yet we are still in a position to do something special this season. That's what makes you so excited to be part of it. When the club came to me recently with a long-term contract, signing it was a no-brainer, because I can see what the future holds here - how exciting this team can become.

"I can't wait, honestly, for what lies ahead, and to be part of it. It excites me. It's the great thing about this club and the manager - he never sits still. There is always change, there is always progress and you can't relax just because you've had a good few years. You always have to play, always have to move on, because the team is always moving on.

"We hope - and believe - that no matter what we have done this season, the best is yet to come with this team. We always believe there is better around the corner here. This team will get better. To sign a new contract is a great feeling, knowing that the club want you to be part of that."
