Stoichkov considering Vietnam offer

Bulgaria legend Hristo Stoichkov is weighing up an offer to return to international management with Vietnam, according to one of his closest friends.

• Stoichkov: Bulgaria's blessing

Stoichkov, 45, left his last coaching role with Mamelodi Sundowns last year despite guiding the club to a second-placed finish in the South African Premiership.

His only other jobs have been with the Bulgaria national team from 2004 to 2007, when he failed to guide them to the 2006 World Cup, and an ill-fated spell with Celta Vigo in 2007.

But according to Emil Dimitrov, the president of Bulgarian second division club Chavdar Etropole, Stoichkov is considering taking on the role of national team coach for Vietnam, who are 136th in the FIFA world rankings.

"Last night, Stoichkov flew to Vietnam as he received an offer to become national team coach," Dimitrov said. "He went there to negotiate as he can choose whether to sign a two-year contract or a four-year contract."

Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto resigned from the post last month and the appointment of Stoichkov would represent fantastic publicity for Vietnam.

Stoichkov shot to prominence playing for Barcelona in the early 1990s and played a starring role in Bulgaria's shock run to the 1994 World Cup final. He won the Golden Boot for his goalscoring exploits in the competition and was subsequently claimed the Balon d'Or the same year.
