Simoni feels Rafa should return

Former Inter coach Gigi Simoni believes Massimo Moratti should consider reappointing Rafael Benitez this summer.

Benitez targets Premier League return

Benitez left Inter before Christmas last year after the club fell off the pace in the title race and finished second in their Champions League group, and his replacement, Leonardo, inspired a return to form.

However, after the 3-0 defeat to AC Milan at the start of April and the Champions League exit to Schalke, doubts were raised over whether he would remain in the job long-term.

Jose Mourinho had been linked with a return in the Italian press but has ruled it out, and Simoni - who was controversially dismissed in November 1998 - believes Benitez should be given another chance.

"It may seem paradoxical, but in case Leonardo is not confirmed on the Inter bench, I would recall Benitez," Simoni said. "I don't think he should've been sent away in the first place. Benitez is a talented coach who was forced to work in impossible conditions."

Meanwhile, Genoa president Enrico Preziosi has revealed he would be keen to sign Inter striker Diego Milito.

Milito, 31, has already had two stints at Genoa and, having struggled in the current campaign, has been linked with a move back to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Asked if he would like to see Milito return to the club, he said: "I would like that a lot. However, this idea has never been put forward to Inter and Diego has a long contract with Moratti."
