Perth Glory snap up Hughes

Perth Glory have signed former Adelaide midfielder Adam Hughes on a two-year deal.

Hughes is the latest in a string of new signings for the Glory, who have overhauled their staff in the off-season.

The club have brought in goalkeepers Danny Vukovic and Neil Young, full-backs Dean Heffernan and Evan Berger, midfielder Travis Dodd and striker Shane Smeltz.

Box-to-box midfielder Hughes had spent the past two seasons at Adelaide and has experience of playing in Europe, having turned out for Doncaster Rovers and Irish side Drogheda United, for whom he scored in a Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kiev.

"Adam brings strength to the midfield, something I feel we missed last season,'' Glory coach Ian Ferguson said. "He's big and aggressive, he'll bring a bit of bite to our team and he's a winner.''

Hughes hopes he and his band of fellow newcomers can re-invigorate the club, which was a dominant force in the final years of the NSL, but have made just one final in six years of the A-League.

"Ian Ferguson is rebuilding this squad with a lot of quality signings which is a real positive,'' Hughes said. "Obviously the results were not great last season so we need to work hard in the pre-season and work hard as a team to climb back up the ladder.''
