Gibson deletes Twitter account

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has opted to delete his account on Twitter after only two hours following a barrage of abusive messages.

• Do you follow footballers on Twitter?

Gibson, 23, set up the @dgibbo28 account (28 is his shirt number at United) shortly after noon on Monday, after being persuaded to by United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) but, within two hours, the account had disappeared entirely.

The account was bombarded with negative comments about Gibson's footballing ability, with many lambasting the midfielder for his wayward shooting skills.

However, Ferdinand insisted that comments directed at the player were not behind Gibson's decision to leave the site.

Ferdinand tweeted on Monday evening: "Darron Gibson says he came on to see what the lads were up to....he came off because he couldn't be bothered with it not any other reason."

Manchester United team-mates already on the social networking site include: Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Luis Nani, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Jonny Evans and Anders Lindegaard and some more positive fans started a #getgibboback hashtag trying to urge the Derry-born midfielder to return to the site.
