Sunderland hit by Gordon blow

Craig Gordon's injury woes have continued with the news that the Sunderland goalkeeper will be sidelined for as long as six months following surgery.

Gordon's knee was operated on by Professor Hakan Alfredson in Sweden on Monday and Sunderland anticipate he will be unavailable for between four and six months.

The Scotland international has started only 15 league games this season and has been usurped by Simon Mignolet in recent weeks.

"Craig had the operation yesterday and it went well," manager Steve Bruce told the club's official website. "He'll be out for about four to six months now.

"Craig's been following a programme but when the specialist had a look at the knee again, we were left with no choice but to go ahead with the surgery. That just sums our luck up at the moment."

Gordon joined Sunderland from Hearts for a fee of £9 million in August 2007 and has started 87 games in four seasons for the Black Cats.
