Juve's Champions League hopes fade

Juventus lost further ground on the European qualification places in Serie A as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina, meaning they are now eight points behind fourth-placed Lazio.

• Saturday: Milan close on scudetto

Several good chances were created throughout the game but neither side could make any of them count as the point keeps the hosts in the top half of the table.

Lazio strengthened their grip on fourth with a convincing 4-1 victory at Catania.

Hernanes put Lazio ahead before half-time before Matias Ezequiel Schelotto equalised soon after the re-start. Stefano Mauri then put Lazio back in front in the 56th minute and Sergio Floccari made it 3-1 with 12 minutes remaining.

Substitute Mauro Zarate capped off a wonderful afternoon for the visitors at the Angelo Massimino Stadium by adding his team's fourth one minute from time.

The result has left Lazio holding on to the last Champions League qualifying spot.

Goals by Kevin Constant and Michele Marcolini saw Chievo overcome the sending off of Luca Rigoni as they closed to within one point of Bologna with a 2-0 win.

Constant enjoyed an easy tap-in to put the hosts ahead after 15 minutes before Rigoni was given a straight red card for a professional foul in first-half injury time.

However, they managed to extend their lead seven minutes from time when Marcolini produced a superb lob to collect only their fifth home win of the season.

Genoa returned to winning ways at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to do their city rivals Sampdoria a favour by defeating relegation-threatened Brescia 3-0.

After an even first half in which Genoa did not seem to want to score, considering the impact it could have on Samp, they took their guests apart in the second 45 minutes with goals from Rafinha, Luca Antonelli and an own goal from Gaetano Berardi seeing them win comfortably.

Brescia therefore remain in the bottom three, four points adrift of safety while Genoa are safe in mid-table with 42 points.

Lecce salvaged a point in their survival scrap with a dramatic injury-time equaliser from Daniele Corvia making it 3-3 against Cagliari.

The southerners had trailed 1-0 from Robert Acquafresca before Djamel Mesbah levelled. But goals from Daniele Conti and Acquafresca made it 3-1 and they seemed headed for a disappointing home defeat as they bid to avoid the drop.

However, Medina Fabiano pulled one back with a header three minutes from time before Corvia smashed in the equaliser after four minutes of added time.

Erjon Bogdani's second-half goal handed Cesena a 1-0 victory in their battle to avoid relegation while it placed Bari one step closer to Serie B.

Bodgani struck in the 48th minute to allow Cesena to leapfrog Sampdoria into 17th in the standings. The result has left Cesena one place and two points clear of the drop zone with five games remaining. Bari, meanwhile, remain at the foot of the standings, 13 points adrift of safety.
