Totti wants Ancelotti to join Roma

Long-serving Roma captain Francesco Totti hopes Carlo Ancelotti will return to coach at the Stadio Olimpico in the near future.

• Ancelotti: Chelsea must believe

Chelsea manager Ancelotti has been strongly linked with a move back to Italy and it is Roma, where he spent eight years as a player, that is widely reported to be his likely destination.

Ancelotti won the Premier League and FA Cup Double last season, but his team have struggled to reach those same high standards this term and if they fail to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the away leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester United on Tuesday night the Blues will almost certainly end the campaign trophyless.

Reports in the UK press suggest former AC Milan manager Ancelotti is already planning his escape route and Giallorossi talisman Totti would welcome him back to Roma.

"Ancelotti has always said that sooner or later he will coach Roma and even if I am 34 I hope to still be there when he arrives," Totti said.

Former Roma boss Claudio Ranieri resigned in February 2011 following a 4-3 defeat to Genoa, in which Roma surrendered a 3-0 lead. Youth team coach Vincenzo Montella was promoted to caretaker boss until the end of the season and the youngest coach in Serie A presided over a thrilling 2-1 victory away to Udinese at the weekend.

Totti bagged a brace to put Roma within three points of fourth place, and a Champions League play-off berth, and when asked about his resurgence in form, Totti said: "Now at Trigoria (Roma's training ground) I am no longer sad. I have always said that I find myself more at ease as a centre-forward.

"I score goals and make others score goals. In addition I have more freedom of movement. But I am not asking for anything ahead of next season.

"If the coach makes me first or second striker there won't be any problems, but I find myself better in this position and I do what I want."
