Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge

50-50 Challenge

Blunder gifts Union victory

The Philadelphia Union have climbed to the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls.

Roger Torres got the only goal in the 68th minute, only seconds after coming into the game as a substitute. Red Bulls defender Tim Ream passed the ball directly to Philadelphia forward Danny Mwanga, who drove at the box and slipped a pass to Torres to slot home.

The Red Bulls dominated the vast majority of the match but failed to turn possession and pressure into goals.

Philadelphia take over from New England at the top after the Revolution lost 2-0 at home to Real Salt Lake in a fiery encounter that included three red cards.

Salt Lake were already leading through goals from Chris Schuler and Paulo Jr when Shalrie Joseph was sent off with 20 minutes to go.

Pat Phelan then followed with five minutes to go after a scrap that also saw Real's Will Johnson earn a second yellow card.

Real go top of the Western Conference standings, level on points with Colorado and one clear of the Los Angeles Galaxy, who missed their own chance to go top as they conceded an 89th minute equaliser to DC United to draw 1-1.

The Galaxy led from Mike Magee's 14th minute strike and were looking good for the win when United were reduced to 10 men by the 84th minute dismissal of Santino Quaranta for a second yellow card.

But Charlie Davies scored an 89th minute penalty to snatch a point.

The Seattle Sounders beat the Chicago Fire 2-1, with Steve Zakuani getting the winner after Chicago's Diego Chaves had cancelled out O'Brian White's opener.

The San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 with Toronto FC, coming from behind as Simon Dawkins cancelled out Alan Gordon's opener.

Chivas USA and the Columbus Crew played out a goalless draw.
