Young keeping options open

Ashley Young says he is eager to start winning trophies but denied he will have to leave Aston Villa to achieve his goals.

Bent not surprised by Young interest

Young, 25, has been repeatedly linked with clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham in recent months having said he will refuse to discuss an extension to his contract until the end of the season.

His current deal expires in 14 months and, with Villa likely to be reluctant to allow Young to leave on a free transfer, many believe they will cash in on the England international in the summer.

However, while Villa are currently battling relegation at the foot of the table, Young insists he is not ruling out an extension and that for now wants to focus purely on helping the club move clear of the drop zone.

"It's always nice to be linked to those teams but I'm an Aston Villa player," he said. "I've got a year left of my contract.

"I just want to do well for the club and, if you ask any of the players here, they just want to get us out of the situation we find ourselves in. I've always said we are going to talk about contracts at the end of the season and that has not changed.

"I'm concentrating on everything that is going on out on the pitch and my focus is fully on doing well for Villa and getting ourselves out of the situation we find ourselves in.

"There is nothing going on in the background. I'm just concentrating on football and I think my performances have been good. I don't know what more you want me to say. I'm putting in 100% every time I go out there.

"I've spoken to the manager, I spoke to the chairman at the start of the season, and they are all happy with what I've said."

Young added: "Of course, I dream of winning trophies. I think every player, if you were to ask them, would say they want to win trophies and titles and medals. I'm no different.

"I'm an ambitious person, like any other person who's in football, to win things. If you were to ask any player why they are in football, they would say to win trophies.

"Can I do that at Villa? Of course - I wouldn't have signed for Aston Villa if I didn't think so."

Young is surprised to find Villa struggling in the bottom half having secured three successive top-six finishes, but he feels the players have what it takes to move up the table.

"If you look at the league table, it has been a funny league this year with the amount of teams involved in the same situation as ourselves," he said. "We found ourselves winning games, losing games. There are times where I think we shouldn't have lost and it is just the way it has gone.

"We've got a few games left to the end of the season and we've got to treat every one like it is the last game and put everything into the games. With the team spirit we've got here, I'm sure we will be able to get ourselves out of trouble with the players we've got in the team."
