Adebayor giving up in racism fight

Emmanuel Adebayor said he has conceded that racism is a "part of life" after claiming he was the subject of abusive chants from Tottenham's fans in Real Madrid's Champions League victory.

On loan Manchester City striker Adebayor, who is a target for Tottenham fans due to his time at rivals Arsenal, scored twice as Madrid beat 10-man Spurs 4-0 in their quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

A chant directed at Togo striker Adebayor in his Premier League days that says 'your dad washes elephants and your mother's a whore' was allegedly used by travelling Spurs fans, which could land the club in hot water with UEFA. The minimum penalty for any racist chanting is a fine of £20,000.

A Tottenham spokesman said in The Guardian that abusive and obscene chanting is not tolerated but the club does not believe the chant is racist in nature. But Adebayor disagrees and he is somewhat resigned to the notion that stopping racism in football is an impossible task.

"Big players better than me have tried to stop that, but it's not easy at all," he said. "We have done everything we can to show the red card to racism. But people are still into it, that's part of life.

"Coming from Africa, I'm just very happy, playing football is like a dream that comes true. And I just want to send a big support to all Africa, with what is happening in Libya and what is happening in the Ivory Coast. I've got a lot of family, a lot of friends. Racists are always there and we can't do anything to stop it. Samuel Eto'o and big players have spoken about it better than I do, but it's not stopped them."
