Roma and France defender Philippe Mexes looks set to miss the rest of the season with a left knee injury.
Mexes, 29, sustained the problem during Sunday's 2-0 Serie A defeat to Juventus and will have to undergo surgery to repair ligament damage.
A Roma statement read: ''Philippe Mexes underwent tests which have revealed a lesion in his anterior cross ligament in his left knee. The player will need to undergo surgery and the time of recovery will be evaluated in the coming days.''
Dr Pier Paolo Mariani, who performed the surgery, said: ''The operation went well and lasted 45 minutes. Philippe was crying yesterday but today he is smiling.
''It's a difficult time because his recovery time coincides with the holidays. The recovery diagnosis is of at least four to six months.''
Vincenzo Montella's Roma are chasing a top-four finish in Serie A. They are currently sixth in the standings - six points behind Udinese, who hold the last Champions League qualifying spot with seven games remaining.
