Cruyff rules out Ajax presidency

Johan Cruyff has denied reports he intends to take over as president of Ajax after the club's entire board announced their resignation following a disagreement with the club legend on how to run the club.

The directors, including chairman Uri Coronel, confirmed they would stand down at a meeting of the club's council members on Wednesday night.

The decision came less than two months after Cruyff returned to Ajax to advise on technical, financial and association issues. And while Cruyff admitted the board's decision was not ideal - the members will stay in place until replacements are appointed - he said he has no intention of heading a team to fill the void.

''I do not need to become president,'' he told De Telegraaf. ''It's never nice when people like Uri Coronel resign as an honorary members. But that's their problem. 'I have nothing to do with the organisation at the club. I was not informed in advance of this step they have taken.''

The 63-year-old has ruffled feathers inside the club's hierarchy since his return to the club where he won three European Cups from 1971 to 1973 as a player.

Last week he publicly questioned their ability to help the club return to their past glories while he also met with them to advise that organisational and personnel changes were needed if the Amsterdammers were to get back to the top.

''Something has to change. That seems clear to me,'' Cruyff added. ''We have recently been eliminated by Real Madrid and then the Russians. If you want to change something, you have some hard decisions. But I do not know what will happen now.''
