Defour linked with move to Benfica

Standard Liege star Stephen Defour has been linked with a €10 million move to Portuguese champions Benfica.

Benfica are reportedly looking for a creative midfielder to replace Pablo Aimar, and the 22-year-old is top of their wishlist, with Record and O Jogo reporting that chairman Luis Felipe Vieira was in Belgium for a meeting last Saturday.

Manchester United have previously been credited with the most interest in the player, with Defour previously claiming that he wants to move to Old Trafford, but there are many other clubs seen to secure his signature and his agent, Paul Stefani, told Record: "Benfica are one of the clubs interested."

Benfica are currently second in the Portuguese league and seem on target for next season's Champions League, while they are also in the Europa League quarter-finals against PSV Eindhoven.

Meanwhile, interest in Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel has increased after his starring performance in the 2-0 win over Austria. Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Ajax, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke, Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen all sent scouts to watch the Standard star, while Arsenal and Manchester United were also there to run the rule over him.

"There are great clubs in the stands during an international game, and maybe I scored at the right time - but I never go on the field thinking about them," said Witsel.
