Van der Vaart targets Real upset

Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart insists he is ready to deal former club Real Madrid a severe blow in the Champions League after calling them "the best club in the world".

• Beckham loyalties divided

Van der Vaart fell down the pecking order at the Bernabeu during his two full seasons in Spain but admitted both he and four-year-old son Damian miss the Madrid lifestyle.

"Little Damian is the best thing in my life," Van der Vaart revealed to The Sun. "He speaks Spanish and English but is always saying to me 'Daddy why don't we have a pool here? There's no sun here. It's not the same in Madrid.' We have a special love for Madrid."

However, the Dutchman is clearly looking forward to having the chance to upset his old club and, having firmly established himself as a favourite at White Hart Lane, is focused on causing an upset.

"Going back to the Bernabeu is a dream for me. It's going to be special,'' he said. "I felt very badly when I left because I was leaving the best club in the world. But I wanted to play every game and in Madrid there are a lot of exceptional players - Ozil, Kaka.

"I am 28 and to keep myself at a great level, I need games. I wasn't going to stay [at Real] and not play. Now I am very pleased in London with Tottenham.

"I love them [the Real fans] but I also want to give them a big disappointment. I am a Tottenham player. We have chances of winning the tie because we have a lot of quality and very good players."
