Wolves' Doyle may return this season

Wolves striker Kevin Doyle has been ruled out for between four and eight weeks with a knee injury picked up on international duty, meaning he could still return to action before the end of the season.

Doyle was carried off in Republic of Ireland's 2-1 win over Macedonia on Saturday with suspected medial knee ligament damage, which left national team coach Giovanni Trapattoni fearing for the forward's season.

"It's his medial ligament," Trapattoni said. "I think he may be out for one or two months, so it's a very serious injury. I hope by May or June he can come back and we can have him for the match in Macedonia."

But following a scan, Wolves fans can take heart that the prognosis is for a four to eight week lay-off, meaning a speedy recovery could see Doyle return to help the club's fight against relegation.

"The scan has confirmed that Kevin has torn his MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament)," Wolves medical chief Steve Kemp told the club's official website.

"We will be working with Kevin to get him back as quickly as the injury allows but the likely timespan is anywhere between four and eight weeks."

Wolves team-mate Christophe Berra earlier lamented the loss of the influential Doyle, who has scored eight goals in all competitions for Mick McCarthy's side this season, but stressed his belief that the club has the depth necessary to continue without him.

"It's a massive blow for us, he's a top player, he does a great job for us up front," Berra said. "But we've got good strikers on the bench in Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Steven Fletcher, who have come in this season and done well and scored goals for us. So we won't be getting down about that, we'll move on."

And Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey was equally philosphical about Doyle's injury, accepting that the it is part and parcel of having players good enough to be considered for their countries.

"We live with international football, and it is clearly a mixed blessing," Moxey told BBC Five Live. "Everyone wants to play for their country and common wisdom says when they play for their countries their values go up.

"That's a benefit if you are selling club but we are not a club looking to sell any of it's players, so that's no benefit for us. But players run the risk of getting injured. Kevin has got injured, he has a medial ligament tear, but it's not as bad as we first thought I'm pleased to say.

"Kevin is a quick healer, he has done it before, we have started the rehabilitation process so we hope he can be back sooner rather than later.''

Wolves are currently 18th in the Premier League table, on the same number of points as 17th-placed West Ham but in the relgation zone having scored one less goal than the Hammers.
