Coleman pulls out of Ireland squad

Republic of Ireland winger Seamus Coleman has withdrawn from the squad for Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia with an ankle injury, the FAI has confirmed.

Coleman has not trained all week because of the injury he picked up during Everton's 2-1 win against Fulham, in which he scored the opening goal, at the weekend.

The highly-rated 22-year-old was assessed by Ireland's medical staff on Thursday afternoon and the decision was taken to send him back to Merseyside.

He follows Newcastle striker Leon Best back to England 24 hours after he also had to admit defeat in his efforts to shake off an ankle problem.

Perhaps more worryingly, Sean St Ledger, a regular in Giovanni Trapattoni's first-choice defence, has not trained since picking up a knee injury in Tuesday morning's session, and his fitness is being closely monitored.

Goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly said: "We are just being careful with him and taking every precaution. We will give him as much time as we can and see what happens tomorrow.

"It's all you can do in these situations when people pick up knocks. Let's see what happens tomorrow.''
