Ronaldo on course for Spurs tie

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to prove his fitness in time to face Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, according to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho.

Ronaldo's participation in the first leg at the Bernabeu has been placed in doubt after the forward sustained a hamstring injury in a derby win over Atletico Madrid at the weekend.

However, with Madrid saying he will be out for "between two to three weeks, depending on his progress", Mourinho is hopeful that Ronaldo will be able to play a part against Spurs.

"We knew Cristiano Ronaldo's trip to Portugal was just so that his national coach and the medical staff over there could check the tests he underwent in Madrid, which were very clear," Mourinho told the club's official website.

"I hope he recovers in time for our game against Tottenham Hotspur. Judging from the mentality he has we believe he will make it, but it will be tight. A return like the one he had against Lyon to help the team will always be welcome."

Mourinho also clarified his position at Real Madrid after conducting an interview with The Sun in which he said he would return to England whenever his reign in the Spanish capital comes to an end.

The former Chelsea manager has reiterated his desire to once again work in the Premier League, but insists he could well remain at the Bernabeu for a number of years.

"I've never hidden my desire to return to England some day, but there are three more years left on my contract and I intend to see them through and to work hard to make the board, the fans and the players happy," he said.

"If I manage to do this I will see those three remaining years through and maybe even carry on with a new contract. I currently feel everyone is happy with the job we're doing. Real Madrid is my near future."
