Eintracht turn to Daum

Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt have sacked head coach Michael Skibbe and anounced the appointment of Christoph Daum as his replacement.

Skibbe was axed on Tuesday morning despite winning Saturday's crucial relegation battle against St Pauli to end the club's dire run of form after the winter break.

Taking his place is former Bayer Leverkusen and Cologne coach Daum, who returns to Germany after a second spell with Fenerbahce ended last June.

Skibbe becomes the 10th Bundesliga coach to lose his job this season while both Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have already announced their current bosses will be leaving in the summer.

"The main reason for the separation was an in-depth consideration and intensive analysis of the negative sporting development of Eintracht Frankfurt in recent months,'' read a statement on the club's website.

"The board regrets this extraordinary step and would like to emphasise the previous success and positive results gained under Michael Skibbe.''

Daum, whose last job in Germany was with Cologne, who he led into the Bundesliga in 2008 before leaving them a year later for a more lucrative job with Fenerbahce, has been given an initial contract until the end of the season.

However, "both parties have the aim of working together beyond the stipulated time period'' and Daum can therefore look forward to a long-term contract, should he manage to save the club from relegation this season.

Frankfurt are currently 14th in the Bundesliga, just three points clear of the bottom three with seven games of the season remaining. Daum will take his first training session at the Waldstadion on Wednesday.
