Jarvis gets England call

Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has been included in the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales and friendly against Ghana.

• Forum: Jarvis good enough for England?

Jarvis had been tipped for international recognition earlier this season after a string of impressive displays, and he has previously been included in provisional squads.

Having scored the only goal of the game against Aston Villa this weekend, the 24-year-old will now be a full part of the squad for the qualifier at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday and the friendly against Ghana at Wembley on March 29.

"It was great to get the call tonight confirming I am in the squad," Jarvis told the official Wolves website. "I'm delighted as you would expect and, to be honest, it's difficult to put it into words at the moment.

"I'd been named in standby for a few of the games this season so it's great that I've finally made it into the squad.

"Like every player, it's been a dream of mine to try and play for England since starting off in the game and getting into the squad takes me one step closer.

"I'll enjoy the news tonight and am really pleased but, from there, it will be a case of joining up tomorrow and trying to impress and do everything I can to get some time on the pitch."

Fabio Capello - who is already without Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and Theo Walcott - had hoped Manchester City winger Adam Johnson would be available but the games come too soon following his recent injury troubles.

England have at least been boosted with the news that Liverpool striker Andy Carroll, who made his debut against France in November, has been deemed fit enough to take part.

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon is also included in the squad for the first time since the 0-0 draw against Montenegro at Wembley in October.

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker, currently on loan with Aston Villa, has retained his place in the squad, while Scott Parker also features after his consistently impressive performances for West Ham.

Capello had confirmed on Saturday that Chelsea defender John Terry will take over the captaincy from Ferdinand on a permanent basis. Terry picked up a knock in his side's 2-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday but boss Carlo Ancelotti said he "doesn't have a problem and he is ready to play for England".

England squad for next Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifying match against Wales and the friendly against Ghana on March 29:

Foster (Birmingham), Green (West Ham), Hart (Manchester City); Baines (Everton), Cahill (Bolton), A Cole (Chelsea), Dawson (Tottenham), Jagielka (Everton), Johnson (Liverpool), Lescott (Manchester City), Terry (Chelsea, captain), Walker (Tottenham - on loan at Aston Villa); Barry (Manchester City), Downing (Aston Villa), Jarvis (Wolves), Lampard (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Milner (Manchester City), Parker (West Ham), Young (Aston Villa), Wilshere (Arsenal); Bent (Aston Villa), Carroll (Liverpool), Crouch (Tottenham), Defoe (Tottenham), Rooney (Manchester United).
