McClaren: Terry is a natural leader

Former England manager Steve McClaren insists John Terry is a ''natural leader'' as the issue of the national team captaincy rolls on.

England boss Fabio Capello revealed on Monday he planned to meet skipper Rio Ferdinand at Old Trafford this week to discuss the prospect of relieving the injured defender of the armband he inherited a year ago in the wake of the scandal surrounding Terry's private life.

It is unclear whether that meeting took place and while Capello's predecessor McClaren was reluctant to weigh in with advice to the current boss, he backed Terry's credentials.

Asked whether the Chelsea skipper is a ''natural leader'', he told BBC Sport: ''Yes, of course he is. I think everyone accepts that, everyone can see that, everybody who knows John Terry behind the scenes knows that.

''I don't want to join in the debate and become another member of the public that is giving Capello advice and opinion. He will make his own decisions, he is strong enough to do that.''
