Successful surgery for Abidal

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal underwent successful surgery on Thursday to remove a tumour from his liver.

Dr Josep Fuster Obregon operated on Abidal at the BarnaClinic Grup Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and the 31-year-old could be given the green light to leave hospital sometime next week.

"During the operation, which lasted for approximately three hours, the medical team removed the tumour through laparoscopic surgery without any complications," a Barca statement read.

"Depending on his progress, the player could be allowed to leave hospital within a week. By the express desire of the player, the club ask for the maximum respect for his right to privacy and confidentiality."

Abidal arrived at Barcelona from Lyon in 2007 and has featured regularly this season for the Spanish league leaders and Champions League quarter-finalists. Abidal made his international debut for France in 2004 and has since been capped 52 times.
