Goal-hero Marcelo savours Real win

Brazilian defender Marcelo hailed Real Madrid's "important triumph" after his stunning goal helped Jose Mourinho's side end their Champions League last-16 hoodoo.

•  Real Madrid 3-0 Lyon

Real had not made the last eight since the 2003-04 season and had never beaten Lyon in the competition, but a comprehensive 3-0 win broke the jinx, much to the delight of those inside the Bernabeu.

Marcelo set them on their way eight minutes before the interval, collecting Ronaldo's pass and beating two defenders before shooting past Hugo Lloris.

Karim Benzema added a second against his former club before Angel Di Maria confirmed Real's victory with a late third.

"We are very happy with the victory," Marcelo told Real Madrid's official website. "It's been a very important triumph for team and fans alike following tough seasons. We had a debt with Madridismo and, thank God, we reached the next round. We are calmer now.

"We played like the coach asked us to and we played hard from the start. We're not thinking about which opponent we may face in the quarter finals. We will try to win and thrill our supporters regardless of whom we face.

Upon the final whistle players from both sides revealed T-shirts in support of Barcelona player Eric Abidal, who will have surgery on a liver tumour on Friday.

Marcelo added: "I wish to express my support for Abidal and his family. Rivalry steps aside when things like this happen. What matters is that he recovers as soon as possible."
