Cattermole pub ban extended

Sunderland's Lee Cattermole has had his ban from every pub and club in the North East region of Stockton extended for a year after he attempted to get back into some of the premises.

• Blog: £50m for an out-of-form striker

Cattermole, 22, was originally banned by all licenced venues in December 2008, along with Middlesbrough's Matthew Bates, after being arrested for disorder on a night out in the North Yorkshire town of Yarm. That ban has been extended until the end of this year, and now a further 12 months have been added.

Stockton Pubwatch chair Steve Paling told the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette: "The Pubwatch scheme works very well in the Stockton area and there are a number of people on Pubwatch bans who are fully compliant with those bans.

"However, we have had numerous reports of Mr Cattermole breaching his ban. We have written to him and even contacted Sunderland Football Club in a bid to resolve this issue.

"He has most recently been to the Fairfield pub in Stockton; the police confirmed this using CCTV so there's no doubt on that. Members have voted unanimously to extend his current ban, which was due to expire in December 2011, by 12 months to December 2012.

"As licensees we are not prepared to take it any longer."

Cattermole had already been warned about his conduct before his arrest in 2008.

The ban means Cattermole and Bates cannot enter any pub or club in the towns of Stockton, Yarm, Billingham or Thornaby.

Cattermole has twice appealed to the Yarm Pubwatch group to have his ban lifted, only to be refused.

Sunderland refused to comment to the Evening Gazette.
