Dynamo bonuses only for Europa glory

Dynamo Kiev owner Ihor Surkis says he will not be rewarding his players any bonuses for their impressive Europa League victory over Manchester City, insisting that they will only deserve bonuses if they win the competition outright.

Surkis, whose brother Hryhoriy is president of the Ukrainian FA, is adamant that Dynamo's players' only incentive should be to claim the club's first major European trophy in 25 years, with money a secondary factor.

So the 52-year-old has cancelled the club's long-standing policy of substantial cash payments to players and staff after wins in continental competition.

"Only when we win the Europa League, are there going to be any victory bonuses," Surkis said on the club's official website. "Only at the end of the tournament."

Dynamo are in an excellent position to qualify for at least the Europa League quarter-finals, after goals from Andriy Shevchenko and Oleh Gusev handed them a comfortable 2-0 first-leg victory over City on Thursday.

But despite the two-goal advantage, Shevchenko believes that Dynamo must not rest on their laurels in next week's second leg at the City of Manchester Stadium.

"We played really well: organised, compact, our defence was outstanding," Shevchenko told ICTV "We created great zones and were able to take a lot of balls, and that allowed us to counter-attack. But the return game is going to be a totally different order of difficulty."

Surkis echoed the sentiments of his star striker, who was re-signed by the club in 2009, saying that his side will need an away goal at Eastlands.

"We are going to have to score a goal," Surkis said. "God willing, next week we will be able to celebrate like we are right now."
