Dyer returns to Ipswich on loan

West Ham midfielder Kieron Dyer has joined former club Ipswich Town on loan for a month, returning to Portman Road 12 years after leaving the Tractor Boys.

• David Gold nearing recovery
• Cole: We can finish in top half

Dyer, 32, has made just 13 appearances for the Hammers this season because of problems with form and fitness but will be given the opportunity to resurrect his ailing career at the club where he received his football ecuation.

The Hammers confirmed the move on their official website on Friday, with a club statement reading: "Kieron Dyer has joined Ipswich on a month-long loan."

ESPNsoccernet understands that Ipswich will only pay a small proportion of Dyer's wages, with the Hammers hopeful that the move will help him prove his match sharpness.

Avram Grant said on Friday afternoon that Dyer could play again for West Ham this season if he proves his fitness.

"Kieron Dyer is a very good player," he said. "He has been injured and needs to play now. Everyone knows him at Ipswich. He will play there for one month and hopefully he will come back fit."

Born and raised in Ipswich, Dyer progressed through the club's youth teams and made his senior debut as a 17-year-old, playing for the club for three more years before moving to Newcastle United.

Dyer's eight-year spell with the Magpies was a tumultuous one and though he played for England at the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004 during his time at St James' Park, he also hit the headlines for an on-field brawl with team-mate Lee Bowyer and various off-field indiscretions.

He joined West Ham in 2007, but his career has continued to be blighted by a series of injury problems and Dyer, once one of England's most highly-rated youngsters, has played just 310 league games in 15 years.
