Defiant Campbell ready for Toon fight

Newcastle defender Sol Campbell has insisted he is ready to fight for his place in the Magpies first-team, despite his failure to impress boss Alan Pardew.

Former Toon boss Chris Hughton - who knew Campbell from his time at Tottenham - brought the former Arsenal centre-back to St James' Park last summer to add some experience to the club's defence.

But he struggled for form and fitness at the start of the season and has found first-team opportunities limited since Pardew arrived.

Campbell, 36, came on for the last four minutes of Newcastle's recent win at Birmingham, but his last start for the club was in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool in December.

Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini have been Pardew's first-choice centre-back partnership, while Mike Williamson is also above Campbell in the defensive pecking order.

But despite being a peripheral figure, Campbell says he has no intention of leaving the Magpies, insisting that he still has something to offer.

"I'm happy to help out wherever and whenever I can," Campbell is quoted as saying in the Daily Star. "It's not over yet. I'm fit and I'll play where I can."
