Angry fans confront Bremen stars

Werder Bremen players were confronted by around 250 fans upon arrival back at the Weser Stadion after Saturday's humiliating 4-0 defeat at northern rivals Hamburg.

The fans prevented the team bus from entering the stadium and demanded, and received, a face-to-face confrontation with the coach and players.

According to the club's website, the meeting was "peaceful'' and that a "constructive dialogue'' had been held.

"It is absolutely correct that the fans wanted this meeting,'' the club's director of sport Klaus Allofs said. "You could clearly tell that they are concerned about the current situation at Werder. Now the team must face up to the fans' criticism and we should not do much talking but instead convince them with our performances.''

However, coach Thomas Schaaf was spared any of the blame for Bremen's slump to the brink of the relegation zone as the fans demonstrated their support for the man who has been in charge for almost 12 years. And Allofs made it clear that Schaaf's position was not in danger.

"We are in a difficult situation but Thomas Schaaf's position is not in question,'' he added.

Germany international Per Mertesacker had a particularly disappointing day as he was directly involved in all four of Hamburg's goals.

"It was a day to forget,'' he said. "This shows that we can all have bad days, but I know that we can get up again and we will do that.''
