Roberto Carlos joins Anzhi

Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos has left Corinthians to join Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala on a free transfer.

Carlos, 37, agreed a two-and-a-half year deal to move to Russia, worth a reported 10 million euros in wages and joins a side who narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight last year.

"We can officially announce our agreement with 2002 World Cup winning defender Roberto Carlos," Anzhi said in a statement on their website.

The defender was voted the best left-back in the Brazilian championship in 2010, but was targeted by fans after Corinthians' Copa Libertadores shock elimination at the hands of Deportes Tolima of Colombia.

"We gave him all our assurances (for his safety) here at Corinthians. He has his own motives," Andres Sanches, president of the Brazilian club, said. "He's a guy of 37 already, he received a good offer from abroad and by mutual accord we decided to free him."

Carlos, though, claims that money was not a factor in his decision to continue his playing career in Russia, with reports that he rejected a move to MLS side LA Galaxy.

"I am going to Russia extremely intrigued," the player had told Sport-Express. "When I decided to continue my career in this country, money was not a crucial factor."

Carlos will make his debut against Zenit St Petersburg in the Russian Cup.
